Get Involved

There are many ways to become involved with the ministries of Lutheran Homes Society, a 501c(3) non-profit organization. As a church-based social ministry organization, it is part of our mission to continually seek out ways to help needy youth and older adults. We know we cannot do it alone. We need the help of giving individuals who care about our mission. Maybe we have cared for your loved one or friend. Perhaps your congregation is involved with our ministry. No matter why or how you support our ministry, we are grateful.

Make a Donation

Through a donation, you can directly affect the ministry of Lutheran Homes Society. Your donations may be designated to one or more of the LHS ministries, as well as a number of special funds outlined in the Foundation section of this website under Giving Opportunities. Your entire donation is directed to the ministry you designate.

Volunteer Your Time

Another way to get involved is by volunteering your time. Volunteers play a significant role in enhancing the lives of the residents we serve. They provide those extra touches that make living at our ministries more like home. Individuals and/or groups can volunteer. Specific needs change by ministry site and time of year, so call to find out what specific needs you can help with today.

Help Stock Our Pantry

Lutheran Homes Society operates a personal care pantry in conjunction with Toledo Area Ministries and First St. John Lutheran Church. The pantry stocks only non-food items, which are often too expensive for seniors to purchase if they live on a tight budget. Check out the list of needed items to see what you can pick up the next time you are out shopping.

Thank you for your support of Lutheran Homes Society.

Provide Needed Items

Lutheran Homes Society operates a personal care pantry in conjunction with Toledo Area Ministries and First St. John Lutheran Church. The pantry stocks only non-food items, such as paper products and soaps. These items are often too expensive for seniors living on a tight budget to buy, since they are not covered by public assistance programs. The pantry is available to LHS housing residents and seniors in the community through a social worker or social service agency referral.

Personal care items need to be new and unopened, while some household supplies and durable medical equipment can be donated gently used.

Wish List

The following items are needed at this time:

  • Toothpaste and toothbrushes
  • Hand soap
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Deodorant
  • Toilet paper
  • Tissues

The LHS Pantry Helped Susie

During her initial visit with the Service Coordinator at her new LHS housing site, “Susie” mentioned that she had moved into her apartment from out of state. Susie also shared that she had not been able to bring all of her belongings and, as a result, did not have many of her kitchen utensils or other cooking items. This was making it difficult for her to be able to prepare meals.

After hearing this, the Service Coordinator checked the LHS Pantry for items that might be helpful to Susie. The coordinator was able to give Susie some pots and pans, kitchen utensils, and a microwave. Susie was thrilled to receive these items and is now able to prepare meals in her new apartment.

The LHS Pantry made a significant difference in Susie’s life, helping her to get settled in her new home, and it can touch the lives of many other older adults through your generous donations.

Volunteer Work

At Lutheran Homes Society, volunteers enrich the daily lives of our residents. With the attention and care of dedicated volunteers, our residents have the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of activities and social opportunities.

LHS is grateful for the dedication of our volunteers. In 2014, over 860 individuals donated more than 25,000 hours of service to our ministries. From playing cards with residents to assisting them to and from church services, volunteers make a difference each and every day.

All four care campuses have auxiliary organizations that support their respective campus and provide volunteer support. As a volunteer, you can choose to join the auxiliary, or not. You can volunteer individually or a part of a larger school, church or civic group. You can volunteer once a year for a holiday, once a month or once a week. The amount of time you have to give is not important. It’s the giving of your time and talent that means the most – to you and the lives you touch.

There are many different areas of need at the LHS ministries. Specific needs vary, but the lists below illustrate many of the volunteer opportunities available.
