- Start-up funds for new programs and services

Capital Improvement Fund
Historically known as the Building Fund, gifts to the Capital Improvement Fund can be designated to a specific subsidiary ministry to help underwrite the cost of:
- New building projects
- Existing building repairs and facility renovations
- New or replacement medical, therapeutic, or physical plant equipment
Operating Reserve Fund
Your charitable gifts to this fund are especially welcome as they help underwrite ongoing programs and services to our residents and assist in meeting expenses not covered by state reimbursements or private fees, and when the LHS Annual Fund falls short of meeting budget shortfalls.
Debt Retirement Fund
This fund is one of our most important funds, assisting LHS in paying down outstanding debt on existing facilities and capitalized assets, substantially reducing interest expenses, thereby freeing those monies to be used in direct support of new and existing ministries.
Youth
Youth Assistance Endowment Fund
This endowment was established through a generous $15,000 challenge gift from two anonymous donors. Your gift to this fund will be matched dollar for dollar, growing this fund to at least $30,000 over time. The Youth Assistance Endowment provides funds annually to help underwrite programs and services to youth aged six to eighteen, including the LHS Maumee Youth Center for Asperger's Disorder, youth scholarships, tutoring assistance and special equipment, five group homes providing residential care to children, special care and treatment of severely emotionally disturbed (SED) children and youth, and the Maumee Bay Bright Star Academy, a cooperative project of LHS Family and Youth Services, the Oregon City Schools, and Lucas County that provides alternative educational opportunities for at-risk youth.
Celia & Jim Findlay Endowment for Youth
Initially established through a charitable gift from Celia and Jim Findlay, your gifts to this fund provide essential support to youth involved in LHS Family & Youth Services programs who have special learning needs. Assistance includes one-on-one tutoring and special learning equipment and materials. Annual awards are provided for youth.
Youth Scholarship Fund
This scholarship program was initially funded by Lutheran Brotherhood (now Thrivent Financial for Lutherans). Annual distributions from the fund assist youth-in-care with certain undergraduate educational costs. The fund provides some tuition and non-academic, incidental assistance (e.g., computers) and services to encourage resident youth to train for productive careers.
Florence S. & Arnold F. Bunge Sr. Endowed Scholarship Fund
Awards from this fund are given to encourage resident high school seniors to strive for success by going to college. One or more annual awards of up to $500 may be granted to eligible seniors.
Lawrence & Adele Youngbauer Youth Endowment
Created through the generosity of Lawrence and Adele Youngbauer, these annual scholarships are presented to eligible seniors at four high schools throughout the greater Toledo area where Lutheran Homes Society has or may have had students in the past. These schools include Anthony Wayne, Cardinal Stritch, Clay, and Lake. School administrators are asked to identify a graduating senior who will continue his or her education in preparation for service in such helping professions as nursing, ministry, social work, or teaching. Each scholarship is in the amount of $1,000 and may be used to help fund educational costs. Distributions are used, as requested, to support the ministry to young people where there is financial need.
R.A. & F.D. Stranahan Endowment
Made possible through a generous $1,000,000 charitable gift by the Stranahans, this fund helps support essential capital needs related to LHS Family & Youth ministries, such as remodeling a portion of one of our group homes.
Elders
Resident Assistance Fund
This fund is designed to support low-income residents of Lutheran Housing Services and residents of Assisted Living who have special financial needs, and LINCS clients. LINCS is a ministry which connects elderly with existing community services, allowing them to continue living independently in their homes for as long as possible. Funded needs include assistance with uninsured major medical expenses, food or other basic necessities, or unusual utility bills or assessments.
Resident Scholarship Fund
This fund helps support the continuing education needs of our older adult residents. Older adults often seek to continue learning by attending workshops, seminars, or formal courses offered at local community colleges or universities. Annual awards may be given to several residents per year.
LINCS Endowment
Lutheran Interfaith Network of Caring Services (LINCS) was created in 2003 as an affiliate ministry to expand our expertise and provide specialized services to needy elderly throughout our 25-county service area. Gifts to this fund help licensed social workers connect elders with existing community services, allowing them to continue living independently. These social workers also coordinate their efforts with volunteers from local Lutheran congregations to provide some direct caring services.
LHS Staff
Staff Benevolence Fund
This fund was created to assist LHS staff in critical times. It is meant to provide modest support to staff members experiencing extraordinary or catastrophic life circumstances.
Staff Scholarship Fund
Scholarships awarded through this fund provide vital opportunities for LHS staff members to develop new professional or technical skills or update current skills. The fund has provided scholarship assistance to several LHS State Trained Nursing Assistants (STNAs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) who have continued their studies to earn degrees as Registered Nurses (RNs). It has also helped support the training of LINCs Coordinators to earn gerontology certificates.
Establishing a New Special Purpose FundDonors may either fund an existing special purpose fund or create a new fund to underwrite a special program or service or fulfill a critical LHS organizational need. With the guidance of LHS Foundation staff, you may choose the fund's name, designation, restrictions, and other use criteria.
You can create a new special purpose fund with a gift of $10,000 or more. This amount may be given as one outright gift or as a pledge payable over a period of three-to-five years. All installment gifts are invested until the fund is fully underwritten at the minimum level. At that time, the fund will begin distributions as appropriate, including the fund principal. Planned gifts are often used to grow the fund significantly as they mature. Donors often enjoy creating their funds while living to see the results of their giving and may add to them later through bequests or other deferred gifts.
